It is that time of year again, where the bugs are out and nothing but fierce! And I don’t know about you but they seem to be worse than ever this year. Since I am allergic to both mosquitos and bug spray (no surprise there), normally I just wear long pants and a jacket and am relatively okay. But this year has not been the case, and last week I was bit by an infected mosquito and it has been downhill ever since. So I went on a mission to make a bug spray out of essential oils that is safe, yet effective. Needless to say, it has be wonderful and smells so lovely that I thought I would share it with you incase you, or someone you know, cannot wear traditional bug spray either.
It is so easy to make and small enough to keep in your purse for those unexpected times. All you need are a few essential oils and a small aerosol bottle (I used an empty Downy spray bottle I had on hand but any small bottle that can safely hold 2 ounces will suffice) and you are ready to go!
Essential Oil Bug Spray
In an aerosol bottle add in:
20 drops of lavender
18 drops lemongrass
15 drops Eucalyptus
15 drops of tea tree
12 drops of Peppermint
Gently swirl together.
Add 2 oz of water into the bottle and voila your very own bug spray!
I have been using this like it’s perfume because I refuse to get bit another mosquito (wishful thinking I know but a girl can dream right)! There is something so calming about this blend of eucalyptus and lavender that it makes me want to create more at home essential oil blends. I hope this helps you as much as it has for me because there are so many alternatives out there for those of us who have allergies/sensitivities to tradition remedies.
